Maulavi Mati-ul-Haq Khalis, the director general of the National Environmental Protection Agency, recently discussed with Mr. Bao Yuhui, Chargé d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, about the expansion of cooperation between Afghanistan and China.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Monitoring: According to a press release issued by NEPA, Mawlawi Khalis expressed deep appreciation for China’s sustained support in various sectors, especially in the realm of environmental conservation. He highlighted the severe damage inflicted on Afghanistan’s environment, wildlife, and forests as a result of decades of conflict, and emphasized the urgent need for more robust international partnerships to address these issues.
The Director General stressed the significance of combating climate change and fostering resilience, noting that facilitating visits for NEPA officials to China at the leadership level would greatly aid in the exchange of knowledge and technical expertise. He underscored that this would be instrumental in strengthening Afghanistan’s capacity to address its environmental challenges.
Maulavi Khalis also pointed out that NEPA is a signatory to 16 environmental conventions. However, he lamented that Afghanistan has been largely excluded from participating in key international environmental conferences. Given China’s global influence, he requested assistance in securing Afghanistan’s place in these crucial international platforms to ensure the country’s environmental concerns are addressed at the global level.
Furthermore, Maulavi Khalis cautioned that Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Should the international community fail to act, he warned, the consequences could extend beyond Afghanistan’s borders, posing significant risks to the global community.
In addition, Mawlawi Khalis requested China’s technical support in equipping NEPA, particularly in the activation of early warning systems and firefighting mechanisms for forest fires. He also sought assistance in advancing clean energy initiatives within the country.
In response, Mr. Bao Yuhui reaffirmed China’s unwavering commitment to supporting Afghanistan, describing the two nations as longstanding partners. He acknowledged the considerable environmental degradation caused during the two decades of U.S. occupation and stated that it is incumbent upon the United States to compensate for the extensive damage inflicted on Afghanistan’s environment.
Mr. Bao further assured that China would continue to provide all necessary support to Afghanistan in overcoming its environmental challenges./Bakhtar News
