Yemenis warn about retaliatory attacks on Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has intensified its airstrikes on different regions of the war-torn Yemen prompting Yemeni armed forces backed by Ansarullah fighters to warn about resumption of their retaliatory attacks on the kingdom.
Yemeni armed forces spokesperson Yahia Sariea said Saudi Arabia has conducted over 350 airstrikes killing over 25 civilians recently since the declaration of the Supreme Political Council initiative to halt drones and missile attacks on Saudi targets.
This development has come after the US decided to deploy 3,000 additional troops and military hardware to Saudi Arabia, boosting the country’s defenses after attacks on its oil installations. Many believe that the deployment is deeply rooted in the US concerns over the growing military capabilities of Yemenis.
Saudi Arabia backed by the US launched a devastating campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the aim of bringing the government of former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power and crushing the Houthi movement.
Resistance by Yemen’s armed forces, led by the Houthi Ansarullah movement, has pushed the Saudi war to a stalemate, with Yemeni forces deploying increasingly sophisticated retaliatory attacks against the Saudis.
Observers warn that Saudi-US escalation could trigger a wider war that could spill over from Yemen into the region in case peace initiatives continue to be ignored by Saudi Arabia and its allies.
