According to Reuters, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) announced by publishing a statement that the Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg's term as NATO Secretary General ended yesterday (September 30) and the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, today (Tuesday, October 1) will officially start his work as the Secretary General of NATO.
According to Reuters, he will take over the post of Secretary General of NATO from Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg today at the NATO headquarters in Brussels. Stoltenberg headed NATO for a decade.
Mark Rutte was appointed as the Secretary General of this military alliance led by the US at the meeting of NATO ambassadors in Brussels at the beginning of September.
Rutte was appointed to this position and succeeded Jens Stoltenberg in a situation where the war in Ukraine has created a security crisis for the members of this military alliance.
US President Joe Biden and his counterparts will officially welcome Rutte at the NATO summit hosted by Washington on 9-11.
Stoltenberg has been the Secretary General of NATO for more than a decade. His general secretary's term was extended several times due to Russia's military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.
