Israeli PM urges P5+1 to toughen up against Iran

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA), International Service , 22 May 2012 - 12:30

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged the six major world powers to pressure Iran during the upcoming round of negotiations between the Islamic Republic and the P5+1, Press TV reported.

Speaking at a civil service commission event in al-Quds (Jerusalem) on Monday evening, Netanyahu said, “The world's leading countries must show determination, not weakness” and take a tougher stance on Iran.

“They do not need to make concessions to Iran. They need to set clear and unequivocal demands before it. Iran must halt all enrichment of nuclear material,” he said.

Netanyahu’s remarks came only after Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano said he held “comprehensive” talks with Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili in a “good atmosphere.”

“During the meeting (with Jalili), we discussed a wide spectrum of different issues, including nuclear disarmament, peaceful use of nuclear energy and strengthening [the position of] the agency,” Amano told reporters.

He added that certain things remain (to be discussed), but “they will not impede the progress of the negotiations.”

The IAEA chief emphasized that the progress of the talks would definitely have a positive impact on the upcoming negotiations between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5+1).

“These are two different issues, but can strengthen one another,” he stated.

Amano renewed his commitment to resolve Iran's nuclear energy issue through dialogue.

Earlier in the day, the UN nuclear agency chief held talks with Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Fereydoun Abbasi.

The latest round of talks between Iran and the six members of the P5+1 group was held in Istanbul on April 14. Both sides hailed the discussions as constructive and agreed to hold the next round of the talks in the Iraqi capital.
