American officials rejected the UN report on the growth of terrorist groups in Afghanistan

15 Jun 2023 - 10:38

American officials announced that the recent United Nations report on the increase in the activities of terrorist groups in Afghanistan is not in accordance with their findings and they reject this report.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: The Analysis and Monitoring Group of the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee has said in its recent report that terrorist groups in Afghanistan enjoy more freedom compared to the past and terrorist threats in Afghanistan and the region are increasing.

But an American official told Voice of America on condition of anonymity that this information "does not match the analysis of our intelligence community" in different parts.

A senior American official spoke more clearly about this and said that "estimates about the number of members of al-Qaeda and ISIS in the United Nations report compared to the information of the American intelligence community and the estimates of our partners and allies" are irregular and scattered.

The senior U.S. official also said that according to U.S. intelligence assessments, fewer than 12 major al-Qaeda members are currently in Afghanistan, and that after the U.S. killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul, no major leader of the organization remains in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is not present.

He said that al-Qaeda has not revived its presence in Afghanistan after the US withdrawal in August 2021, and it does not appear that this organization has established training camps in Afghanistan.

The United States has also dismissed intelligence by some members of the United Nations that Al-Qaeda leader Saif al-Adl had left his base in Iran and visited Afghanistan in 2022. At least one member of the United Nations has said that al-Adl is currently based in Afghanistan.

This American official said that the Khorasan branch of ISIS has not been able to achieve its goal of attacking the United States in the past two years. This official added that the pressure of the Islamic Emirate is one of the reasons for the weakening of ISIS.
